Drone mapping and inspection across Alberta counties

City boundaries are an administrative line, not an operational one. The aggregate pit, the feedlot, the wellsite, the gravel stockpile and the reclaimed lease are all outside them, and so is most of the work. The counties below are the ones inside routine mobilisation from Edmonton, plus the industrial districts further out where jobs are planned as mobilised multi-day trips.

What follows is what the land is used for in each, because that is what determines the deliverable. A county of gravel pits wants volumes on a fixed specification. A county of canola wants multispectral survey. A county of process plants wants inspection that does not require a shutdown. Same aircraft, different job.

Strathcona County is two jobs in one municipality. The western edge holds Refinery Row and a share of Alberta's Industrial Heartland, so the work there is facility documentation, flare and stack inspection where a shutdown is not an option, thermal survey of process equipment, and progress records on turnaround projects. Flights sit inside busy controlled airspace and close to industrial security, so authorisation and site notification are planned before mobilisation rather than on the day.

South and east of Sherwood Park the county turns agricultural, and the request changes entirely. Grain and mixed operations there want drainage mapping, field-scale contour and the occasional yard and bin-site record for insurance. The same crew covers both, which is why an operator based in the Capital Region is worth more here than one flying in.

Sturgeon holds the northern share of the Industrial Heartland around Redwater and Gibbons, with upgrading and fertiliser plants, tank farms and the pipeline and rail corridors that feed them. Right-of-way documentation, tank and vessel inspection, and stockpile and laydown yard inventory make up most of the industrial workload.

Away from the plants, Sturgeon is productive grain and canola country on some of the better soils in the region. That produces a steady demand for multispectral survey and drainage work, usually on quarter-section blocks where a farmer wants to see where water sits before deciding on tile or a ditch. Morinville, Legal and Bon Accord sit close enough to base that scheduling is rarely the constraint.

Parkland runs west from the Edmonton edge to Wabamun Lake and the power generation corridor. Reclamation is the defining job here: former mine and plant land moving through progressive reclamation needs repeatable before and after terrain models, and the comparison only holds if every capture uses the same ground control and the same specification. That is the kind of program built once and flown on a schedule.

The eastern half is acreage country around Stony Plain and Spruce Grove, subdividing steadily, which generates lot grading, drainage and site progress work. Gravel operations along the Pembina add stockpile volumes to the mix.

Nisku is one of the densest industrial parks in Western Canada, and most Leduc County work is generated there: yard inventory across oilfield service lots, roof condition surveys on large-format buildings, and progress documentation on new build. Pipe, module and equipment yards are a recurring request because counting and measuring them from the ground is slow and inaccurate.

The county also surrounds Edmonton International Airport, which governs how anything gets flown. Captures near the airport are planned against controlled airspace from the outset, with NAV CANADA authorisation in hand before the crew leaves. South and west toward Calmar and Thorsby the county returns to grain and cattle, with drainage and field survey the usual ask.

Lamont is the eastern member of the Industrial Heartland, and the least built-out of the four, which makes it the one where greenfield and early-works documentation matters most. Rail terminals and transloading facilities around Bruderheim need site progress records, and undeveloped heavy industrial land needs baseline terrain before anything is broken.

The rest of the county is grain and mixed farming on the Beaver Hills edge. Baseline capture before construction is worth pressing for here: once a site is stripped, nobody can go back and measure what the ground looked like beforehand, and that first model settles more disputes than any later one.

Beaver County is grain and cattle country with an older gas field underneath it. The surface work is agricultural: drainage mapping on land that holds water in the spring, field-scale contour, and pasture and fence-line records for cattle operations running across multiple quarters.

The subsurface legacy generates a different request. Wellsites at various stages of abandonment and reclamation need condition records and terrain comparison, and a landowner negotiating a reclamation certificate is in a stronger position with a dated, measured surface model than with photographs. The Beaver Hills and Miquelon Lake country to the north also draws environmental and habitat mapping.

Camrose County is among the most agricultural municipalities we cover, with canola, cereals and a substantial cattle presence across the Battle River country. Multispectral survey is the work that pays for itself fastest here: variability that is invisible from the truck window shows up clearly in NDVI, and the same flight line repeated through the season shows whether a management change did anything.

Feedlot and cattle operations bring their own requests, mostly pen and yard layout, drainage around confined feeding areas, and runoff containment records that need to satisfy a regulator. Coulee and river-break terrain along the Battle River is difficult to survey on foot and straightforward from the air.

Wetaskiwin is mixed farming with a strong cattle and dairy presence, and the requests reflect it: pasture and forage assessment, drainage on low-lying quarters, and yard and outbuilding records. Dairy and confined operations increasingly want documented runoff management, which is a measurement job rather than a photography job.

Pigeon Lake adds a second workload. Lakeshore subdivision, erosion along the bank, and property records for seasonal owners all need accurate, dated imagery, and shoreline change is one of the few things a repeat aerial survey can show that nothing else can. West toward Alder Flats the county turns to bush and oil and gas access, where lease and road condition work picks up.

Red Deer County is aggregate country. The gravel deposits along the Red Deer River and its tributaries support a concentration of pits, and stockpile volume measurement on a fixed capture specification is the single most requested job in the county. Flown to the same specification each cycle, the figures compare period to period, which is the entire point for anyone reconciling inventory against sales.

Alongside the pits, the county carries feedlots, grain operations and a dense oilfield service presence through Innisfail and Penhold. Corridor and pipeline right-of-way work runs through it on the QEII spine. Sitting roughly midway between Edmonton and Calgary, it is also the county where a single mobilisation most often covers work in both directions.

Rocky View wraps Calgary and is developing faster than almost anywhere else in the province. The dominant request is construction progress documentation on commercial and industrial builds around Balzac and along the Stoney Trail edge, flown on a schedule so the owner has a continuous record rather than a folder of one-off site photos.

Gravel extraction is significant here too, with the same stockpile volume work as Red Deer County. Feedlots and irrigated land to the east add agricultural survey. Most of the county sits inside or beside Calgary controlled airspace, so authorisation planning is part of every scope rather than an afterthought, and it is the kind of work we already do on the ring road corridors.

Yellowhead County runs from the Pembina River west to the Jasper gates, and it is forestry and energy country rather than farmland. Cut block and reforestation assessment, haul road and bridge condition, and gas plant and compressor station documentation make up the work. Edson and Hinton are the service centres, and both sit far enough from Edmonton that jobs are planned as mobilised multi-day work with the full scope captured in one trip.

Wildfire has repeatedly reached this county, and post-fire terrain and reclamation records are a genuine and recurring need there.

Whitecourt is a pulp and forestry town with an oil and gas service base attached, and the work reflects both. Mill yards need log deck and wood chip volume measurement, which is stockpile work by another name. Forestry roads, river crossings and cut blocks need condition and progress records across country that is slow to cover on the ground.

Being roughly two hours from base, Woodlands jobs are scheduled as mobilised days rather than drop-ins, and it is usually worth combining a Whitecourt capture with anything outstanding in Yellowhead County on the same trip.

Brazeau is an oil and gas service county with a substantial agricultural base underneath it. Wellsite, battery and access road documentation is the recurring industrial request, and the abandonment and reclamation cycle running through the region means a lot of it is terrain comparison: what the site looked like, what it looks like now, whether the contour has been restored.

Drayton Valley is the service centre, and the North Saskatchewan River valley through the county produces difficult access terrain where an aerial survey replaces a day of walking.

Lac La Biche County sits on the service corridor into the oil sands, and combines energy, forestry and a significant lake and recreation landscape. Access road and lease condition, camp and laydown documentation, and pipeline right-of-way records are the industrial requests. Shoreline and lake-edge work around Lac La Biche itself adds erosion and property survey.

This is mobilised work, planned as multi-day, with weather and daylight windows built into the schedule rather than assumed.

Heavy oil defines the Bonnyville district, with thermal recovery operations, well pads, pipelines and the access networks that serve them. Facility and corridor documentation is the core work, along with reclamation records as older sites cycle out.

The operational fact that governs everything here is airspace. CFB 4 Wing Cold Lake sits in the middle of the district with restricted and military airspace around it, and a great deal of the surrounding area cannot be flown casually. Work there is planned against those restrictions with the necessary coordination completed in advance, which is the same discipline we apply on the controlled airspace captures already in the record.
