Case study / Alberta / Media

Four locations, three cities, one capture format

Media capture across four car wash sites in Calgary, Edmonton and Red Deer, including flying a spherical platform through a working wash tunnel.

The challenge

A brand with several locations needs them to look like one brand. Capture that varies site to site produces a library that cannot be used together. The format has to be decided once and then repeated, in buildings that are not identical and on days that are not identical.

The sites

Four locations: two in Calgary, one in Edmonton and one in Red Deer. The client is not named here for the time being.

Equipment and method

Exterior capture to a fixed shot list at every site so the four sets cut together. The interior capture is the harder half. A wash tunnel has no satellite positioning, walls close on both sides, equipment is moving, and every surface is wet and reflective, which is difficult ground for both the pilot and the camera. Spherical capture was flown through the tunnel itself to put the viewer inside the wash rather than looking at it from the door.

Airspace and safety

Interior flight in a working commercial facility. Each tunnel was walked before it was flown, and capture was scheduled around trading hours so no customer vehicle was ever in the space during a flight.

Deliverables

A matched set of exterior and interior media from each of the four sites, plus 360 spherical capture from inside the wash, delivered in a consistent format across all locations.

Result

Four sites in three cities captured to one standard, which gives the client material that works as a set rather than four separate shoots. It also demonstrates something narrower and more useful: that the interior of a live wash is a place a drone can work, which most operators would decline.
