Case study / Calgary / Thermal screening
Pre and post sunrise thermal assessment of a commercial roof
A commercial roof assessed with paired pre sunrise and post sunrise thermal capture, delivered as raw radiometric data for an engineering client.
The challenge
Trapped moisture in a roof assembly is invisible during the day. After solar loading the whole surface reads uniformly warm and genuine anomalies disappear, which makes an afternoon thermal flight close to worthless. The engineering client needed data they could analyse themselves rather than somebody else's interpretation.
The site
A commercial roof in Calgary, assessed without any roof access, lift or ladder.
Equipment and method
Mavic 3T radiometric capture flown twice, before sunrise and again after, so the two datasets could be compared as the surface began taking on heat. Thermal mapping across the full roof was paired with targeted spot imagery of the areas that read as anomalous.
Airspace and safety
Urban Calgary airspace with authorization arranged ahead of the flight window.
Deliverables
Thermal mapping of the full roof, targeted spot imagery of suspect areas, and raw radiometric data delivered for the engineer's own analysis.
Result
A short list of specific locations warranting further investigation, in place of a whole roof question. The engineering client received the underlying data rather than a summary, which is what their assessment process required.
